Now that I think back, some of the most trying times in my life, drew me closer to God and I yearned for a deeper relationship with Him. In essence those times brought me closer to God.

Humans live to avoid tension, conflict, “drama.” It is when things become unbearable, disturbed, that we are moved to change. This is the case with learning. It is the case with personal growth, both in secular and spiritual perspectives.

I recall, as a new believer, the fruits of The Spirit in Gal.5 I was excited and quickly said to myself long suffering, “what is that, that will never happen to me.” It wasn’t long , very rapidly, I was plunged in to the depths of suffering. Every believer must suffer in order to grow., and I learnt , the more the suffering the deeper I grew. Its the supernarptural work of The Holy Spirit changes us from proud, arrogant , into gentle humble, loving and God centered people.

Dr. Crab said it best. “suffering is required before we’re going to learn truth in a way that changes us.” It is so easy to become complacent and ‘settle for less. If we are not placed is the most uncomfortable and perhaps impossible situation, we tend not to even call on God, much less surrender and depend on Him.

Because we often live under a deception of what the “first things” and “second things” are in life, God sometimes shakes us up by the tribulations of life, before we can discover what really matters in life, that we should be seeking primarily. It is in this sense that Christians suffer, and this is the reason.
