Have you had discussions about creation and evolution in your classroom? If so, how did those go? Is there anything you would do differently? If you have not had these discussions in your classroom, how do you think you would handle them? - Discussion Forum - Our Daily Bread University

I teach eighth grade English. One of the books we tackle after completing the Hobbit, is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I love to introduce the Lord of the Rings with reading a bit of the Silmarillion to the students. I first have the students read Genesis chapter 1 out loud; then I read a bit of the Silmarillion. I like to allow the students to compare and contrast the two. We get into some very good discussions over the biblical view of creation and Tolkien’s creation version of Middle Earth.

I have not worked in a Christian school yet and my subject matter does not include anything about Creation, so I have yet to have these discussions. I would do my best to articulate my beliefs. We would have a project about Intelligent Design Theory alongside Evolution and see what scientists say and what the facts really are. Then, I would compare these two theories to the Biblical account and allow the students to decide. I would emphasize to the students they need an open mind and to look at the facts rather than just believe what they have been told.

Because I teach Math we do not speak on evolution but this year this topic will be a good biblical talking point.

I teach middle school English so there is not much on evolution in my current curriculum. I do remember though explaining to my students that I do believe in evolution as in things evolve or change over time but that is not how we were created. Basically, the difference you were explaining as micro versus macro evolution.
