Have you memorized any Scripture? If so, how has that impacted your life? If not, how do you think you could begin to memorize Scripture?

I have memorized scripture. It was when I was an adult and it was hard for me to do. It has helped me to have a better understanding of God’s teachings in the word. I can also reference scripture when I am with my students. I try to continue to memorize scripture, it just takes a while.

I have memorized scripture and at that time I did not know that God was preparing me for something that came up later where I needed that scripture to stand on to make it through the storm that I was going through.

I memorized an enormous amount of Scripture between early childhood and high school graduation. It has given me a wonderful foundation for looking at the world through a biblical lens and showing me the importance of God’s Word. After high school graduation, however, Scripture memory fell solely on me as there were no more youth programs externally motivating me and helping me to memorize. Since then, I’ve only memorized a handful of Scripture of my own accord and I know that needs to change. I’ve tried different methods such as phone apps, notecards, etc. but am still struggling to find what works for me as an adult. I will press on, however, until I find the most effective way for me to continue memorizing the Bible for I want to be able to daily say with David, “Thy Word have I hid in my heart… .”

Having come to faith in Christ later in life, memorizing Scripture wasn’t taught to me as valuable. One of the ways that I could begin to memorize Scripture is to do it book by book. I know that it is rather overwhelming to think about but I believe that it helps in understanding the meaning behind what God and the author are trying to communicate without accidently taking the verse out of its context. I have no problem with verse memorization, but find this method beneficial.

The first Scripture I ever memorized as a child was John 3:16. I have carried that verse with me, (as I’m sure most people have) throughout my entire life. It’s a very simple, but strong Scripture that sums it all up! As an adult, I recently decided to memorize Psalm 23 with my daughter. I don’t know why I picked this Scripture, but that’s what God led me to. Memorizing this Psalm has actually been a huge comfort to me. It brings me comfort in various ways. It tells me who God is in all His wondrous glory and gently forces me to take rest in Him. It also tells me who I am in Christ, even amongst those who are against Him.
