I have memorized lots of scripture. Much of what I memorized was when I was younger and it really has stuck with me. The Spirit will bring it to my recollection just when I need it most. This is why I do believe it is important to make scripture memorization part of our classrooms. I have memorized larger passages with friends from church over the past couple summers. It has been such an enjoyable treat to do that with other sisters in Christ and encourage one another and share helpful tips for those of us that struggle more with memorizing. When those passages have come up later in listening to sermons or in other ways, it is remarkable how much I can still remember and how I understand better what it being taught because I studied and memorized that portion of scripture.

I struggle to memorize anything. I also do not trust my memory. However, I know the importance of memorizing scripture and I need spend more time doing it. There have been several instances when I was meeting with students and I struggled to recall a Bible verse and had to look it up.

Hi Bill, you should try the app Bible Memory. I use public transportation and use that time to learn and review verses. It has helped me–a 50+ year old, dyslexic learner. Even though I am like you and do not trust my memory, I still feel like it is encouraging and helpful when I spend the time trying.

I think all four of these questions can be intertwined. Memorizing scripture is extremely important in our Christian walk. Jesus gave us that example. He didn’t respond to satan with his own craftiness, or ideas. Yet, Jesus responded with scripture. He understood, as should we, that our fight isn’t of the flesh but of the spirit. Therefore when we use spiritual truth we can defeat the enemy. Truth, being scripture, sets us free. There are so many times in my life that I’ve recited aloud memorized scripture. And in those moments faith can rise up, hope can rise up, and strength will rise up out of me. Hallelujah

I was involved in the Awana program at our church when I was a young girl. There are so many verses that I memorized then that I still know by heart today. I wish I would have studied more. The impact on my life would be knowing and having ready these foundational truths of God’s Word. I recently helped with Vacation Bible School and memorized Psalm 145:1-3. Our VBS included parents and we had parents and children quoting these verses to me. It was really difficult for me, I had to write the verses down several times, sing the song that went with them and practice so many times, but I finally did it. Now to review and keep it in my heart.
