In college, my roommate and I attempted to memorize the book of Philippians. We didn’t quite finish, but many of those verses come to mind quickly and frequently. In elementary school, our church had all the kids memorize an entire book in John. I’m not recalling the number of the chapter, but I can still recite portions of it. My mom had a CD with verses put to music. Those verses have stuck better than anything else. I recommend learning through music if possible!

I have memorized some scripture. It is always helpful and comforting to lean into and reflect on the truths taught in Scripture. This lesson has convicted me to learn more verses and apply them daily, when in need or in thanksgiving.

I was so blessed to be raised by Christian parents that put a strong emphasis on Bible memorization. We were all enrolled in Bible Memory Association (BMA) and assigned sets of verses according to our age and ability, starting at age 3 with the A-B-C book (one verse per letter of the alphabet). I still remember those verses over 50 years later! We also attended summer BMA camp where we studied the scriptures with other believers as well as having lots of fun. In Sunday School and Pioneer Girls club I learned more verses by heart. I am very aware of the great privilege as well as the heavy responsibility I have of obeying and sharing the Word I have hidden in my heart. One way I still try to memorize the Bible is to do it with a prayer partner or small group to keep me accountable. If anyone is trying to memorize, the easiest way I have found is learning verses put to music, like those on Steve Green’s “Hide ’em In Your Heart” albums.

I have memorized many scriptures, but very few I still remember. They impacted me by remembering what my purpose is in this world. What God’s truth is when I hear Satan’s lies. When I am feeling down, it lifts me up. Characters and stories give me encouragement and encouragement and wisdom I can share with others. When I know more of scripture, it’s been wonderful to be able to say like Jesus, “It is written…”. In general, it’s just really exciting now that I am able to quote scripture and also share about the teachings of it.
