In the first century world, to move about the societal classes was very difficult. If one was born into a station, they lived their lives there. The practice of patronage was essential for most to succeed in this dichotomy. Jesus grew up knowing the difficulties of life faced but his chosen people. ‘Tis brings understanding as to what life consisted of in Jesus day.

If I understand the background correctly, it seems that patronage was part of the culture in the first century, however I’m not sure I fully understand how they interpreted this in regard to their relationship with God. As far as our current culture, and my own perception, I believe that Jesus is our only way to God. We are only able to come to God through Jesus. Perhaps this concept of patronage is a picture of that. By God’s grace, He offers us salvation through Jesus. And as an aside, I will comment that the concepts covered in this course so far – shame, honor, patronage, etc – are actually missing from our modern society.
