It helps me as a teacher, to recognize that I am not just at school to teach my students a subject. I am helping to shape how they view themselves and their purpose.

As people in our society increasingly question their identities, it is important that educators, pastors, and those who disciple others recognize that helping others understand their identity in Christ is a priority. If we live knowing who we are in Christ, we can live with purpose, knowing that we are God’s workmanship, created for good works which He prepared for us beforehand (Eph. 2:10).

My students this fall represent a huge range of skills, from well below grade level to excelling on standardized tests. My job is to keep in the forefront of my mind that they are all equally precious children of God and capable of great contributions and fulfilling lives in Christian service … no matter their background or current skill level.

Students in my high school classes are often getting their first jobs. They begin to see freedom in having their own money. It is important to include lessons like the statement about our bank account demonstrating our focus. It is a valuable reminder for students and teachers to examine our hearts.

It is important to remind our students they are made in the image of God; they are loved, and are created for a God given purpose in this life. We must always connect the truth of the Bible into every lesson we teach.
