I teach English at a private Christian school and we often tie in scripture and how that relates to our walk with God through the literature. Often these questions of worldview arise.

I teach US History and Government and Politics. This lesson relates to my work as I am educating the future voters and leaders of our country to make informed, empathetic, and missional decisions. As a teacher to students and young adults that are called to influence the world for Christ, I love John’s story and how he was able to impact millions through his obedience and sacrifice.

The concepts discussed in this lesson apply to my classroom because not only are my students made in his image, I am. Remembering that I am to model and cultivate an environment that helps them realize who they are made in the image of and the purpose for their life. This has really hit me when she said, “We are to educate children for eternity.” I want my classroom to reflect that. Not just the core subjects, but God’s love and acceptance. I always tell my students that they are made in His image. This means that they are special and created for a purpose. I also need to remind myself on tough days that I am was created by God, in His image, and this is me fulfilling a calling He placed on my life many years ago.

I began teaching and taught 10 years in public schools. So many teachers, so dedicated, held the talents and abilities and potential of their students in high regard and loved and respected them. I would have to think very hard to name teachers who were not truly dedicated to their students. I hope and believe they knew the same of me.
Many were Christians, not all I suppose. The difference in how they/we taught in public school was, of necessity, in leaving out the words: God, Jesus, creation, child of God, Jesus Loves Me, love one another. These word omissions were lived by the teachers, sneaked in at after school functions (and frequently during school.) But the freedom of presenting, of first importance as we are able in Christian school, the love that God has for kids, brings all other subject matter and learning into focus. The witness was there in public school, but the clarity of direction for life comes from speaking the Word.

I work with ages K5-12th grade students and it re-iterates their value. They aren’t just “on deck” and not usable to God. They are being used everyday and they are vital to His plans. This lesson was just a quick reminder that they are so important to Gods plans that I need to constantly remind them and myself how God sees them. In our society it is easy to dismiss young adults, but when we do that we crush their spirit, and sometimes that includes God’s Spirit trying to work through them. We need to treat them the way Jesus treated young John.
