As a teacher of literature and writing, I often have the “big questions of life” come up in my classroom as many of the texts we study deal with these issues. It’s imperative that as an educator, I help to facilitate discussion that allows students to wrestle with these questions while always maintaining a biblical worldview at the discussion’s core.

It helps me to zero in on the real purpose of why I am a Christian teacher. This has helped me to reframe my goals and objectives as I plan lessons. Yes…learning goals are imperative but they only partially fulfill my calling as a teacher. I need to ensure that evry one of my students knows that they have value and purpose as they learn and grow.

The concepts discussed helped me better understand my purpose as a Christian educator, and that what I do goes with my students far past my classroom. Everything I teach, every interaction with my students, influences them, and I want to make sure I teach and influence them in Godly ways. Children learn by example, and I want to be a Christ-like example for them. I want my students to understand who they are (a child of God), to love God, and that their purpose is to serve Him in whatever calling He has for them with the gifts and talents He’s blessed them with.

I believe that what we do in the classroom, how we respond to students, as much as what we teach them helps them to know God.

My goal for my students is to know who they are and who God is to them. Also, to equip them to be able to stand up for what/ Who they believe in, and to confident in it.
