We talk about respect in the classroom. I want to encourage students to try in math. Some are often nervous to try for fear of getting it wrong. We talk about encouraging words instead being a stumbling block to someone by our laughter or hurtful words.

I have not really paid attention to this. However, now I think it’s high time I focused on it. Normally, I have my children recite a statement before their lesson. In the statement, there is a phrase that reads ” I am governed by the spirit of righteousness“. I could try to have a discussion with them about righteousness and the results of it, then try to blend it in with the fruit of the spirit, which I pray settles in their heart. Hopefully, when they get to that line, they’d remember about the fruit of the spirit, and the more they say it, with God’s help they start to act it out.

We sing the fruit of the spirit song and we talk about each one. We look for the fruits of the spirit in our classroom. We talk about how the behavior is the fruit of the spirit.

The first semester in my kindergarten class is all about teaching children the fruit of the spirit. My classroom rules are centered around it and children often can reflect using the fruit of the spirit focus as their guide-point. It isn’t uncommon to hear a kindergartner telling a friend to exercise “self-control” while taking turns on the playground slide.

As a second-grade teacher, I incorporate the fruit of the Spirit into my classroom by teaching and modeling love, kindness, and patience in our daily interactions. We practice self-control when someone hurts us, even when we feel like throwing a tantrum or expressing anger. We encourage gentleness when working with others. To promote joy, we hold regular celebrations and testimony times during class devotions. To foster peace, we use conflict resolution strategies and prayer. By intentionally integrating these biblical values, my students build a strong foundation for social-emotional learning and Christian character.
