How do you imbed the fruit of the Spirit into your classroom? Or, if you haven’t previously considered this, how might you go about it now?

Our classroom rules will be modeled around the fruits of the spirit. My plan is (during the first week of school) to discuss how we should act in a classroom… I want the students to tell me how we should act and how we treat one another. As they point out various characteristics, I will link them to one of the fruits of the spirit, until we have covered all of the “fruits”. I plan to have fruits cut out, labeled with the traits of the fruits of the Spirit. Once they’ve chosen and colored a fruit, I want to display it on a tree that I’ll have ready on the wall. Throughout the school year, I’ll refer to our tree when needed. During a lesson, I can just as easily refer to one of the “fruits” when we are studying characters in a reading assignment.

With my high school students I would imbed the fruit of the Spirit in my classroom when we had discussion arounds ethics as it related to science. For my 3rd grade students I plan on using discussions after reading books with them and focus on character development within the text.

The fruit of the Spirit are usually incorporated in the characteristics of the characters in the books the students we read. We either try to identify them or identify the lack of them.

The fruit of the Spirit is a concept that we have all dealt with our whole lives, the idea of the Golden Rule. Treat others as you would want to be treated. This helps others to see what is an appropriate way to react and how to treat others. This includes the idea that more is caught than taught. We need to set examples and let students know the expectations up front so that they know where they are aiming. Discipline and accountability can really give you freedom and access to lots of other ideas you couldn’t access if you are spending all your time trying to rebel or to disrupt.

We use the fruits of the spirit as a guideline for our behavior side of the report card.
