They determine how you approach everything. If I believe that the Bible is correct that I’m here as a special creation of God, made in His image, and meant to glorify him in all that I do, then that affects all of my thinking, my motivations, my philosophies…and also, my teaching.

The answers to those most fundamental questions about human existence should influence every area of our lives. Followers of Jesus should look distinctly different than those who deny him (Romans 12). As these things influence every area of our lives, personal and professional, it has tremendous influence in the classroom. Our answers to those most important questions are the foundation and guiding principles to our teaching. We cannot teach Biblically if we do not answer these questions in the Gospel-oriented way. It should be the center of all we do in the classroom, and in through every aspect of life.

Firstly it has helped me to revisit what are the actual big questions. They get forgotten in the crazy day to day life of school, academic achievement, social and cultural events, logistics of everyday life etc. These questions will help me to refocus and reset and keep my eyes on the real calling that I have as a Christian educator.

My role as a Christian educator is to not only teach reading, writing, and arithmetic, but to also help students know and understand who they are in God’s eyes. My answers to these questions, based on God’s truth, are important because my job is to teach the next generations of believers why we should serve and praise Him.

Knowing we were made for a purpose and that God has a plan for our lives gives me comfort on days where I am questioning everything. This in turn helps me to continue on the path before me, educating students not just about school but about who were are meant to be in Christ.
