He teaches that we should have an intimate prayer life with the Father, and that we need to get our motives in check.

Jesus teaches us to open our hearts when we pray and show our very inside even when we do not like what we have there. He teaches us to confess to him what is behind our needs and ask for his help during our little struggles in life or our most vulnerable moments.

Jesus teaches us that our relationship with God through prayer is personal. God provides on the most basic level and even the grandest – if we ask.
While Jesus says that we should be like children, we can’t mistake this for ‘childlike’ in our requests. I’m aware of people who have missed the metaphor used.
Our requests should always have the level of understanding and maturity that we seek God, His kingdom and will first.

He wants us to pray often, he gives us an example of how to pray. He prays often to set an example for us through himself. He says multiple times to pray for whatever we want. As long as we have the correct motives God will hear us.

Jesus shows us the correct priority not only of our prayers but of life in general and how to approach Him when we pray, to acknowledge Him, exalt Him (seek Him first), request provision and sustainence, our daily bread, not only food but meeting all of our needs; ask for forgiveness and that we will be forgiving, let us not be tempted and deceived by the evil one, and even though the word thanksgiving is not included in the prayer, we are giving thanks through our praise of His sovereignty and power. This teaches us to go deeper by showing us how to pray so that God will hear our prayers, and creating a deeper level of intimacy with God. Deep calling unto Deep.
