How does your understanding of mankind’s fallen nature impact your work in the classroom?

My understanding of mankind’s fallen nature impacts my work in the classroom by giving me an understanding that my students (and myself) are not going to be perfect, but there is a consequence that follows when we sin. I lovingly explain when a child needs to receive a consequence and why that can help shape them into more Christ-like people.

We are all made in the image of God. When I make a mistake while disciplining a student I apologize and have a course discussion about my wrong action and how it should have been handled according to God’s word. This lesson opened my eyes to be more aware of the fruit of the spirit when dealing with others.

It helps me remind the students, and myself, that sin comes naturally to us. We have to purposely train ourselves to be kind, be a good friend, be forgiving etc. We need to practice to see the good in others and let them know about it. If we practice enough, we can create a habit, and it stays with us in our lifetime.

I cannot expect my students to be perfect and, in turn, they cannot expect me to be perfect. If I call them out on something, I also make sure to call myself out in front of them to show them that we are all in the same boat and need to help each other grow closer to God and do what He desires.

We all sin and need the grace and love of the Father in our lives. First, I have to recognize that I messed up. Sometimes, a family member might need to let me know that what I did hurt them. In the same way, students may need help understanding that their actions affect others. Next, we must confess our sin and ask for forgiveness. Since Jesus came to be our rescuer, we have received the greatest gift ever given. Our attitude toward students who make mistakes should be full of grace and understanding. Yeah! We are forgiven and we get a fresh start – a clean slate!
