As a former public school teacher, it is incredibly refreshing to be able to teach in a school that gets back to the Christian roots of education.

It helps me understand that the Bible was used as a foundational tool for education. It challenges me to keep the Bible foremost in my lessons.

Understanding the roots of the educational system in the US helps me to see what happens when a society strays from a Christ-centered education to focusing on standards-driven education. It’s sad that overall, content doesn’t seem to matter anymore; it’s all about hitting standards at a certain percentage of mastery.

There are benefits and drawbacks in both the traditional and process/mastery orientations. The traditional methods seems myopic in focusing too rigidly in course material. If literacy has been mastered in a local population, teachers can expand into broader topics. However, literacy rates in America have been dropping so returning to this model would be the necessary foundation. In the process/mastery orientation, students can achieve the standards at their own pace. However, these shortcuts could stunt the maturity that develops through intensive and systematic study.
