Education is constantly in a state of flux as it mirrors the values of our culture. It’s important to understand the development of educational philosophies and to evaluate our own teaching to be sure that it is both intentional and founded on Christian principles. Without that, we are at risk of meaningless adaptation to whatever the latest trends in education are.

The educational system used to hold God in a place of primary importance, such as prayer, Bible reading and even public display of those elements within schools. The climate of schools is certainly different than when I was going to school and while high emphasis is placed on academics, students are missing out on important elements with the exclusion of Biblical Truths. Students often do not know who they truly are, what their purpose is and cannot fathom a future. There has to be a blend of traditional and process mastery. Both are important because students need to be well rounded and should be able to give an account for why and what they believe. If we brought God back into public school, I think we would be seeing improvement in character, morality, identity, discernment and wisdom.

God used to be a part of education. In public school settings, He is no longer allowed to be taught. As this has happened, we see a shift in students behaviors and academics. God needs to continue to be the foundation of education.

It seems as though the traditional orientation concerns itself more with the individual and the process/mastery orientation concerns itself more with the students as a whole. You can see how and why it has evolved through the years when you consider where we are as a nation today morally.

I loved learning how education used be centered around the fact that students should be ready to give a defense of their faith/beliefs (1 Peter 3:15). I really would like to incorporate that into my own classroom. I don’t want my students entering the workforce or going off to college not truly knowing why they believe what they believe and then losing their faith or succumbing to the beliefs and opinions of the world around them rather than keeping their heart and mind focused on God and His Word.
