Understanding the roots of the educational system in the US helps me to know how far education has come. It also allows me to understand what has been taught and what ways it was taught. It helps me to bring new ways and material for comprehension into learning for a better future; one that can move education even further.

I believe that as time goes on and our knowledge of the different working systems of earth change so should our education. It is important to note that the foundation of the educational system in the US was from a desire of parents to give their children access to knowledge and specifically knowledge of the Bible. I believe that should always be fundamental in our education system, but I also think it makes sense that the way we teach and the expectations we have change as the access to the amount of knowledge we have as humanity changes.

The understanding of the roots of the educational system in the US helps me appreciate my school even more. As my husband (an alumni) likes to say, they teach students how to learn. The learning doesn’t stop with they graduate. They know how to evaluate things with the Bible as the lens.

I am not sure I understand all the differences between traditional and process mastery. I think it is important to understand the roots of the educational system and maybe see pitfalls. I do think that the aim should drive the process and methods. So my view really hasn’t changed. I think students need to learn all the different subjects to have an eclectic knowledge to process and think. I think students need to memorize information to have it in their brain to assimilate it and process in thought. I think students need to learn to live in community. Most jobs they have will be repetitive and will require people skills. I think individualizing curriculum too much does not prepare students realistically for the work place.

I believe that we need to hold the standard in the educational system, be open to try new and inventive practices, but do not throw out tried and true methodology like basic phonics programs that worked for generations to help students learn how to read. There will always be advancements that can be made in secondary learning, but I feel, for the primary students, the foundational and fundamental concepts of handwriting, basic math skills, memorization of facts relating to our countries history, patriots, and founding fathers, and basic reading skills with comprehension need to be mastered before moving on to more explorative and “common core methodology”.
