I understand better why the education system today is the way it is.

I know it has become every popular to try to use very different methodology to attempt a new fascinating way to do something. It’s great to be open minded, but the way we were taught as children is the basis for fundamental academic strength. We have keep fundamentals at the forefront of the educational system. Then, yes, add to it. I’m finding it more and more common that students do not know how to write without spell check or they can’t divide without a calculator. We have to keep engaging our brains. Technology is great, but so is the human brain! We need to continue to feed it and not become so dependent on technological advances.

It totally makes sense that the roots of the US educational system come from parents’ desire for their children to learn to read so that they could read the Bible. After all, one of the reasons that the Pilgrims came was for religious freedom. Over the years, God and the Bible have been taken out of our schools–no wonder we are where we are today!

I think finding things that worked well in the past and keeping them in practice but then finding what is current and new and melding the two together. This way there can be the best practices for both aspects.

I understand that the schools here were founded (Harvard is an example) to teach the Bible. Harvard has strayed remarkably from its roots. The pilgrims did travel from England to Northern Europe seeking a home where they could practice their faith. I believe we should lean back into the idea of the family’s values as the basis for the child’s education and not having it controlled by government.
