How has your denominational or theological background shaped your understanding of calling?

In the last fifteen or twenty years my denomination has begun to teach about calling as it pertains to ministry, specifically the pastor/teacher, evangelist and exhorter. With the exception of being called into a relationship with God, and the preaching/teaching and exhorter ministries, I have been totally confused about calling. This lecture has given me a better understanding of the concept of calling.

I was born into 2 denominations, Baptist and Methodist. Baptised in the Presbyterian church. Married a once-upon-a-time Catholic. Spent 30+ years in a spiritual wilderness, then was drawn back to a awesome Methodist community. I have known since I was a teen that I was on a path, but it was not until the pandemic that I responded to the call that had been a gentle whisper throughout my years in the wilderness, so I don’t really feel for me that it’s a denominational thing.

I am shaped through and through because of my denomination. It bears all to who and who’s I am. In connection to this I choose to work with At-Risk Youth and Youth Groups. I am determined to continue to make a difference and through my heart I believe that this is my “Calling”.

I was raised as a child in one denomination, saved as a teen in another, and when I married we settled into another. It was a teen that a missionary speaker spoke at a church service when I really felt the Lord captured my heart for service in overseas missions. It was the study of God’s Word through 21 years of Bible Study Fellowship (as a course member, Children’s Leader, Children’s Supervisor, and Substitute Teaching Leader) that I really shaped my understanding of calling.

The denomination where I belong shaped my understanding of calling through the different teachings I have heard from my pastors. Similarly, the foundations of the church where I belong emphasize the different ways and means by which “calling” can be addressed.
