Because Proverbs was written for young people, today it is useful as a guide, for instructions, useful for wise sayings and what to do/as well as what not to do. It can save someone from a lot of growing pains that aren’t necessary to experience or learn (it’s all about taking heed) and therefore, can prevent someone from having to learn the hard way.

As the lecturer suggests, a selected verse or couplet from Proverbs can be used frequently or daily for table conversations with the family. When I was with a Christian school some years ago, we used to encourage the students to memorize verses and we checked on them. On reflection, those verses were culled from all places; perhaps it would have been better if we had standardized them to be from Proverbs, and we could spend Friday afternoons to discuss them together. For the youth congregation at church, a study series on Proverbs can be designed for their cell groups.

It is useful because it gives guidance to living a life that respects Mother and Father to begin with. It teaches us to watch our language and how we treat other people. It teaches us that the words we choose are important. It teaches us to be slow to anger and to forgive others. These are important topics that most of us struggle with our entire lives.

Proverbs was written to teach young people to make wise choices. Memorizing verses from Proverbs makes them a part of one’s thinking. Parents and teachers should use the book of Proverbs to help young people learn to make the right choices in life.
