I will use what I learned in this lesson to focus on helping my student to read. I teach first grade. If a person is interesting in knowing about God, the only way the can get a good understanding on who God really is, is by reading for themselves. The goal to learning to read is to learn to read the word of God.

It is important to keep standards integrated into our curriculum and lessons.

Through this lesson, I was able to better understand the traditional model vs. process/mastery model. In my classroom, I find it important to help each student master the set standard. Students receive supports as needed. I do my best to ensure students comprehend the content, not just have answers memorized. Dr. Black emphasized the importance of going beyond state standards and ensuring the Bible is infused. As a teacher, I want to my students to learn through a biblical lens, where the Bible and our school’s curriculum has become seamless. Yet, I want to encourage questions and critical thinking to ensure mastery of Biblical and curricular understanding.

Well, if you don’t have a goal then you will not achieve it. Mine is a little different because I teach Art. That being said, I have certain goals and objectives that I want my students to understand and try to achieve. Because we are in a Christian school, these objectives are woven with Christian values in mind making it traditional. But because it is Art, there are processes to learn to master a technique.

We are teaching students to be citizens in the world. They need to be educated well above the minimum standards set by the local government, taught how to learn and how to become life-long students. We are taught to teach to differing abilities and that is important as well, so that all can benefit from their education. However, it is most important that we teach, as Harvard students of long ago, to have a defense of their faith in God.
