I also love how this lesson highlights the different types of education so that I can make sure and use different techniques to reach all of the type of learners in my classroom. I agree with other posters that standards are a great way to keep up with learning of students AND that it is important to teach more than just the standards or to just teach to the test. We have an awesome opportunity at this point in time to bring a lot of new things into our curricula. While I had 1 or 2 college courses available in high school, my son will complete his Associate’s degree before he graduates with his h.s. diploma. I think that this lesson really helped me to see our opportunities for new and great things but also cautioned me not to completely throw out traditional teaching completely.

However, the process/mastery orientation has a lot to offer with teaching students various skills rather than just objective knowledge. This could be highly valuable in my classroom.

Standards, as stated in this lesson’s video, are part of teaching and hold teachers accountable for material taught. Our society has leaned into a mastery of standards orientation. But both orientations, Traditional and Mastery, have similarities and differences in approaches to learning. I believe education is always changing based on society, but the goal of education does not always need to change.
