How might you use what you learned in this lesson in your school/classroom?

I think it would be beneficial to my school to create our own curriculum (apart from textbooks) that incorporates our Biblical worldview while also including state standards. As a Christian educator I want my students to strive to learn educational concepts that are required by state standards with a Biblical worldview. I also think this challenges me as an educator to think outside the box and no get so caught up in testing/scores. Our goal is always to glorify the Lord in whatever we do. That looks different for every learner.

Having standards is important and necessary to help guide instruction and to ensure that students are mastering concepts. However, as Christian educators, we need to evaluate whether those standards also align with biblical principles and the goal of educating the whole student.

This lesson will help me analyze the type of approach I will be using with my students. I have always had to stick to the standards when I worked at public schools. I will focus on making sure whatever approach I take will align with a Biblical world view.

I love the idea that everyone is needs to be educated so that they can study God’s word and have a personal relationship with God. I also love how this lesson highlights the different types of education so that I can make sure and use different techniques to reach all of the type of learners in my classroom. I agree with other posters that standards are a great way to keep up with learning of students AND that it is important to teach more than just the standards or to just teach to the test. We have an awesome opportunity at this point in time to bring a lot of new things into our curricula. While I had 1 or 2 college courses available in high school, my son will complete his Associate’s degree before he graduates with his h.s. diploma. I think that this lesson really helped me to see our opportunities for new and great things but also cautioned me not to completely throw out traditional teaching completely.

I have tended to use the more traditional orientation in my classroom in the way I teach. It is certainly reflected in my assessments. However, the process/mastery orientation has a lot to offer with teaching students various skills rather than just objective knowledge. This could be highly valuable in my classroom.
