How would you respond to someone who says that Jesus Christ was a wonderful teacher but nothing more?

It is very evident that the disciples all died very horrific deaths. They would not have been willing to die for a lie. I would also point them to scripture as well, especially John 14:6 that says, “I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the father except through me.”

A great teacher does not lie to those he is teaching. I would also point out the miracles performed by Jesus and the knowledge that Jesus had about people, for example, He called Zaccheus by name without being told. And the knowledge he had about the woman at the well. A great teacher wouldn’t have this knowledge.

Indeed He was a wonderful teacher. Yet He was also a beloved friend and son. Everything in His life was given as an example for our daily living from what to do when something is troubling us to how we ought to treat others around us. He was the only one ever to claim He is the Son of God and Pontius Pilate despite the evidence provided to him could find no fault in Jesus. His public act of washing his hands of the situation to release Barabbas or Jesus was clear. He released Barabbas at the will of the crowd and let everyone know he wanted no part of what happened afterward. I would also direct them to research Lee Strobel’s work in “The Case for Christ” which takes us on a journey through from Athiesm to Christianity. He was an attorney, and part of his nature is to discern facts and truth. There is a book version, which I found very effective even before the movie version came out. A beautiful testimony of what only God is able to do. Those who want to seek after truth will find it.

I would reply in love that Jesus was much more than a teacher. I would talk to them about the miracles he performed. I would also talk about him raising out of the grave to beat death and him preparing a place in Heaven for us.

I would posit that if that were the case, then Jesus was a terrible teacher. If He was not the Son of God, then that would make Him a liar. Honesty is an invaluable trait within an educator. Christ is the prime example of a teacher because of who He is as the God’s Son.
