Be honest about issues that affect us from society and from inside the church. Offer Scriptural principles that apply, but be honest in admitting some problems are difficult. God has all the answers–we don’t and it’s often a learning process for us. Listen to students ideas about issues. Discuss whether or not biblical concepts apply.

I tell my students no. Teaching Kindergarten sometimes this is a very new word that they are not prepared for. I explain how things will at times be hard, not what we want, and all around not what they would have chose.

For children who are educated in a Christian school since young age like me, it may seems like a culture shock when they step into the real world. They used to live amongst believers, adults they can trust and surrounded by reminders to live their lives according to the word of God. Since I work with juniors and seniors in high school, I often reminded them to not forget their upbringing, to look for a church and community of believers when they go to college and to keep in touch with me and reach out when they need help.

Be open with them about the fact that they will face struggles. I have never been one to sugarcoat, so I guess it’s a good thing I teach high school students. I am always an open book with my students, as much as is appropriate, of course. Sharing stories of hard times I have gone through but explaining how God was still in control is important for young ones to hear.

We can talk about things going on in our communities and our world. We can see what the scriptures say about it and how we should handle it. We can get reassurances from the Word of God and not be afraid of those things that lie ahead of us.
