I think one thing I can do better is giving students complements when they do good work. This isn’t something that I do frequently enough. Also, I think that it’s important to see the kids outside of the classroom. Either catching up with them in the halls, at lunch, or even other school activities.

I could take more students to lunch throughout the year and I could continue to coach sports throughout the year.

One of the practices that I can work on regarding nurturing my students is to make a personal connection with students regularly. I have the tendency to spend lunchtime and my break preparing lessons and grading, instead of making time for students who come for a chat – that might be the moment that I can make a personal connection with them. From this lesson, I was reminded of the importance of “nurturing” my students in a natural way outside of the instructional hours.

I think that it could be advantageous to have students fill out a response form to see what school activities they participate in to ensure that I can either attend an event or create dialogue about something my learner is participating in. I also will make a more concerted effort to be at the door to greet my students.

Nurturing students can come in many different forms. One way I would like to nurture my students is to have an end of the week game in the classroom. A game that will allow them to be relaxed and not fill the pressure of learning something new. I think a good game would be “Name that Face”. In this game, the student will be allowed to make a face and the others would try to guess what the expression is. That will give students a chance to know different expressions and also allow them to express how they are really feeling. Also, a way to nurture them would be having a classroom lunch at least once a month. I would like for the students to be able to eat in the classroom and share their thoughts about their day.
Nurturing a student doesn’t take a lot of imagination when the teacher already has a caring and respectful attitude toward all the students regardless of the background.
