I love the part of the video that states that having all your materials ready and lessons prepared ahead of time is something that nurtures our students. I often feel like I need every second of my time with my students to fully complete my lessons, so if I’m unprepared, I am eating up valuable time. My personal desk is also the desk I use one on one with my students. I have an alarm on my phone so that I can clear out my desk and make space for my time with my student, so that when they arrive, all the materials we’re using are ready and I’m not scrambling trying to figure out where we left off in our last meeting. I thrive with organization and I know my students feel nurtured by it as well.

I could set aside the last 5 minutes of course to decompress, reflect, and just say goodbye. We area sometimes so rushed at the end of the day that we are hurriedly putting things away and packing and running out the door to dismissal. I see how it would be important to get a proper goodbye and hug before heading out the door and just having a peaceful moment before the kids are having to rush out at the end of the day. I could also do better at being more present in the mornings when children are entering the classroom. I am often still setting up things to teach instead of taking time to great every student, which is so important.

I like the idea of having lunch with students. I am considering one day a week, that any students that would like to have lunch in my classroom, just to eat and chat together, to make that a possibility.

One practice I could implement to further nurture students is to eat lunch with them more often. Building those connections and ensuring that students know that I am available helps them see that I care. It also gives me another opportunity to hear the conversations that they are having and to notice if there are students who are being left out. Another area I’d like to improve on is to be more intentional about carving time out at the beginning and end of the period to make that personal connection with them as we start our time together and as they walk out the door.

Definitely be more intentional in the first and last minutes of the course. To engage more with the students and have the time to get to know them better so I can be able to discipline them having in mind what they are like and why they behave the way the do. What things are affecting them in their homes and if I can somehow win their trust so they can know they can come to me if needed
