Identify one or two practices you could implement to further nurture your students.

Next year, I would really like to be better at meeting students at the door. Last year, I was so busy with transitioning between courses that I rarely said hi to students as they came in. Also, I would like to take time to acknowledge student success outside of my classroom as well whether it be academics, standardized testing, sports, or other.

One area I know I could improve on is being better prepared for early finishers. Often these kids that are left with nothing to do can become a source of distraction and frustration and I respond with impatience. I want them to not sense this from me in anyway and while this often a choice that the student makes, I have responsibility in these issues as well. My preparedness in this area will be a way to love and nurture them. This was my first year back to teaching after a long hiatus to raise my own kids, so I didn’t have all the things I normally would, and COVID restrictions limited space in our classroom for anything extra. I am diligently planning and working on having all kinds of things for them to do that are engaging and fun. I will also have a daily or weekly Must Do, Might Do, and Can Do list somewhere very visible. This will help them do a self check to see if they have taken care of everything that is necessary before moving on to the activities and games.

I love the Must Do, Might Do, and Can Do list before they can move on to the “extras”. Great idea!

I think one area that I could improve on to nurture my students is to have clear course rules, expectations and procedures. I find it difficult to simply write down a set of expectations and help the students learn them and practice them. This can cause me stress when students do not meet my expectations. However, I realize that I have not communicated those expectations to them clearly. I have been working on this last semester.
I also like the idea of teaching students to nurture one another. That is a valuable skill for life.

From hearing the lecture, I believe something I had never really thought about as nurturing my students was being prepared with my lessons. I try to always be organized and ready to teach, but teaching preschool-high school art is a real challenge. I apologize to my course when I am scrambling around the room trying to ready some supplies. I can see how this shows respect to the students and as I gain experience, I believe this will improve.

One of the practices that I plan on implementing with my 3rd grade classroom to further nurture my students is to make sure that I greet every student by name as they enter my classroom and give them a couple of options for greeting me. This way it is on forced and allows the student to decide how they would like to be greeted.
