Even for adults, I believe the best practice for nurturing spiritual growth is to encourage them when they are thinking and asking questions. Positive responses and encouragement can be given even when students need to work more to get better or correct answers.

I want to stay consistent with discipline, positive and negative. I want to make sure that I am acknowledging positive behaviors in the classroom in addition to those times when I need to call out the bad behaviors and choose the correct consequence.

I could use the step-by-step approach more consistently, starting with a nonverbal cue, a private word at to their desk, a conversation in the hallway away from any audience, and progressing to an office time-out. If sent to eh office, when the erring student return I can quietly welcome back him or her with gracious words. I can stop myself from any idle threats to involve other adults.

Instead of doing the same writing style bellwork each class, I want to have more casual conversations to get to know the students better. I used the writing to understand their grammar and to grasp their understanding of our reading material, but it was perhaps too one-sided.
