Identify one or two practices you could implement to further nurture your students.

One practice I do with adults I teach is empathetic listening during sessions. I take notes of what they register as significant, pressing, and valuable in and to their lives. After each session, I share a summary of the work we’ve done together, including each person’s contributions and breakthroughs instead of a rundown of impersonal content. Finally, I prayerfully consider if there is something I may “action” for their benefit or delight. For example, if a student mentions a concern I may privately message them to inquire if they would like to receive prayer for that concern or I might incorporate a favorite practice/experience into our next session, etc.

As a substitute I am not directly responsible for the lesson material. I do however try to suppliment the material that they do have by finding something that may help them or add to what they are doing such as short videos that apply to the material they are working on. I am still trying different methods to reach the students. Nearly all the classes that I go to the students are allowed to use their cell phones. This is a major distraction and the students are glued to their phones so much so that they ignore most of what I say. They just do their own thing. I mention this to the administration and ask for assistance but as of today most of the administrators are content with what is happening as long as the students are not causing much of a disturbance so that they have to deal with them.

I should spend the last few minutes of class reviewing but also having conversation to build relationships with the students.

I would like to implement being intentional about the last 5 minutes of classes with the students. It’s important to send them off with a sense of hop and accomplishment.

As mentioned before, my organizational skills need to improve to the point that kids can plan ahead from advance notification and consistency. This would give clarity for them and for their parents.
Students know that I care about them and will do my utmost to help them. They also know that I am a bit of a pushover. I need to push back more often, and not overlook lethargy and mediocrity.
