For science I would have students choose to work as a group or individually to create science projects on the lesson that they are learning in course or have them pick an essay question from 3 that I give them and write an essay on a book that the course is reading.

This will be my first year to have my own classroom, and I’ll be teaching reading & writing. I like how Laura said she assigns a list of different options that students can complete at the end of one of their novels. I actually would like to do something similar with my students, as we’ll be doing about 4 novels together this year. It can also be as simple as assigning their list of spelling words, but giving them to flexibility to create their own sentences using any of the words from their list. …. Or allowing them to create their own sentence and labeling it when we label sentences.

Precisely as Dr. Black says, we try to allow students to present a multi-media project, a podcast, or write a traditional essay while meeting the same standards and assessments.

The level of flexibility is integrated into the assignments in my classroom. All students are held to the same requirements. Within each assignment there are options for the students to select. They have a preference that they can choose in the project, but the learning objectives are the same.

In science, I facilitate stem projects throughout the school year. In these projects, the students have a set of rules to follow but are able to use their own creativity within the structure.
