One should start with traditional values and standards and then accomplish those through all forms of teaching. One should always be looking for ways to differentiate.

I as the teacher feel there are times that flexibility is important and should be allowed and times when it shouldn’t. I liked the idea presented that we could give choices when it comes to assessment time. I think that is something I could contemplate and work on. There are students who would chose every time to just do a written test or write a paper, but there are those that really have learned what is necessary and do not do well studying for and taking tests. I could think creatively about different ways to offer assessment choices when it is appropriate. I think another appropriate place to offer flexibility is with large projects or group projects. I could adapt some of my lessons to offer more choices on those projects.

So in writing, for example, students can choose between a few topics to do informational writing, persuasive writing, opinion writing, etc.. I can also be somewhat flexible on due dates. When I teach middle school or high school, I let students determine how long they need to complete an assignment based on their other course load. As long as it is reasonable, I am fine with that.

Also, one day during each unit I give students a course period to use how they see fit. They may work with me on homework, they may work on their own, or work in small groups.
