One way I can help prepare my students is to simply help them be reassured about what they believe in. All good comes from God, and through teaching history (about a world where everything that is not good comes from humanity), students learn in my course that a fallen world is not to be followed. Emphasizing that students can trust their church and the people around them is critical to preparing them to enter a fallen world.

I can prepare them by teaching them to read and reread the Scriptures. Help them have an understanding of the Bible and how to apply it daily in their lives. I can share with them instances in which I have dealt personally with those questioning my faith and also be honest with them that there will be times people will not back down, so they will just need to stand firm in their belief and be assured what they know from God and the Bible to be true.

Using books, videos, or situations to role play how we can react to attacks on our Christian faith.

This needs to be a topic that Christian schools everywhere dive into. Just a few months ago a parent came up to me asking for help for her daughter in defending her faith. During an after-school activity a “friend” had attacked her faith and she did her best to defend it.

Through this situation I’ve been thinking about how we can shepherd and train up our students to defend their faith. First, making sure they know scripture. It was mentioned before during another lesson, that memorizing scripture can be extremely handy as you go out into the world. Weekly memorization in the lower grades can truly get students in the word and knowing the word. Also, discussing in course the questions students have and situations that there could be doubt. This could be so important in steering students to guide those around them. Lastly, having students serve and go out into the community around them helps them to put into practice what they learn.

As a literature teacher, I want to make sure students see the underlying arguments in classic and contemporary literature. We want to read challenging texts but with caution and scriptural grounding. I want them prepared for the arguments they will receive in college about literature. As a math teacher, it’s important to teach absolute truth as a connection to scripture.
