In 3 John we learned how to deal with someone teaching false doctrine. How do you respond to teachings that contradict Scripture?

When I think that someone has taught or said something contradictory to Scripture, I will often ask (1) where that particular statement is located in Scripture or (2) look up specific Scripture to expose their false teaching. Typically, when someone is unable to provide the Scripture for their statement(s), they will either admit their error or silence themselves. As a teacher of students in middle and high school, I have often seen these responses with the students. I have also seen adults respond much the same, whether in person or on social media. The main point is that only by knowing the Scripture for myself can I then address false teaching by someone else.

I would turn to the Word. I would study it. If in doubt, I seek wise council.

I go to the Scripture and read for myself what was said. If this person is someone in front of me, I would ask questions and direct our answers/conversation to what Scripture says. If this person is someone I do not know, I would pray for this person.

First of all, you do not sit under any false doctrine. You let the elders know what is going on and bring it to the person’s attention. Then you approach the party in question and show them the error of their ways but first allow them to show you why they believe that way. You do not get argumentative. You simply then use scripture to gently correct them. If they do not receive it, then you no longer permit them the right to speak publicly. You must do this in all in love.

I tend to lovingly point out false teaching but I have been quiet and shy in the past but getting more confident. with these lessons and with future learning through these courses i’m hoping to gain more confidence in this
