We should avoid self-gratification and arrogance and instead be humble and obedient to God’s will and plan for our lives

Saul was prideful – beware of pride, which comes before a fall. Solomon loved wealth and knowledge. Beware the love of knowledge without the love of God.

For Saul is was pride, and for Soloman it was lust. But for both, ultimately it was not trusting God.

In both Saul and Solomon, we see a similar issue in their heart. Although it works out differently in each of their lives, Saul and Solomon both deal with a heart that desires the approval of man rather than the approval of God. We see glimpses in their lives of moments when serving God only was the most important priority in their lives, but those moments dont last long. Saul is chosen by the people to be the King of Israel, and always has the desire to please the people in the background of his actions. Solomon loves the approval of people, which is why he becomes embroiled in so many relationships that do not honor God. For us, we should strive to live a life pleasing to the Lord rather than those around us. This may be easier said than done, but if we are solely focused on following God and honoring Him with our lives, than we may not fall into the pattern of Saul or Solomon.

In Saul’s case, we should avoid allowing our fears and insecurities to make our decisions for us. In the case of Solomon, we should avoid allowing the culture and luxuries of life to take away our intimacy with God.
