In briefly considering Saul and Solomon, what spiritual hazards should we avoid?

I think they both had a desire to please self instead of bring glory to God. Saul trusted in himself instead of heading to the Word of the Lord and Solomon had wisdom and chose not to operate in it. He chose to live for the pleasures of this life instead of the glory of God. We should avoid isolating ourselves from the voices of Christian community (Saul) and avoid operating in our own wisdom rather than the wisdom of God (Solomon). We must be in prayer and God’s Word daily, asking Him to give us an eternal perspective and keep our heart pure. We must actively remain in Christian community.

They forgot about God and let jealousy (in the case of Saul) and the love for money and also he got mixed with women of other cultures that did not worship God.

In Saul’s life, his biggest spiritual hazard was probably his pride. The power he possessed in being king made him convinced that he couldn’t be replaced. For Solomon it seems as though he struggled with greed. He was constantly acquiring more possessions, more land, & more wives. I’m sure this made his life very complicated and caused him to forget how reliant he was on God.

Saul – jealousy, rage, unhealthy longing for control, trusting in self rather than the Lord
Solomon – pride, self-indulgence
