The requirements from God to be a successful king was to seek Him wholeheartedly, obey Him, His commandments, and have his heart devoted to Him. This is where both Saul and Solomon fell down at different points during their reign, which ultimately led to their fall from God’s grace. I can see how this request from God applies to us today.

We should stay away from our worldly sins and turn to god and live day by day with him.

We should avoid disobedience to Gods leading and also, we should anything that will move us away from God

listening to our own will rather than God instruction leads to destruction

Seeking after our own interests, rather than God’s, will lead to destruction. Saul pursued his own fame and glory, Solomon pursued women and riches — both pursuits ultimately led them to loss of vitality in their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual lives. The same is true for us.
