To be able to understand the message of any prophetic Biblical book, the reader must first know when the book was written. Secondly, they must know to whom the book was written. This includes the cultural dynamics of the time because each book was written to a certain people at a particular moment in time and typically addressed a specific issue that had arisen. It is also important to note the setting.

Dr. Buzzell states that to understand the message of a prophetic book, “we must understand the culture or the situation a prophet was addressing before his message can make sense to us… We need to understand to whom a prophet spoke and the period of time when he did so.”
