They was disobedient to God and the Israelites would wander in the wilderness for 40 years as a result of their unwillingness to take the land.

God trained the people of Israel in the wilderness for 40 years to know and follow who God is. He led the people of Israel to see and rely solely on God in the wilderness.

The generation that left Egypt disobeyed God. They lacked the faith to carry them forward to the land God had promised to them. So the entire generation had to pass before the next generation could have the opportunity to move forward.

The generation that came out of Egypt was afraid to go into the land of promise. They didn’t trust God to protect them and provide for them, so God allowed them to wonder in the wilderness until that generation had died off and the next generation would go into the land of promise.

They wondered in the wilderness because of their disobedience to God. Besides, it was in response to their prayer to not let them enter the promised land but rather to remain in the wilderness, and so, there that generation that disobeyed God perished.
