In the book of Numbers, we learn that the Israelites wandered aimlessly in the wilderness for a generation. Why?

They are afraid to go into the Promised land because do not trust God can help them conquer the enemy there.

Because the Israelites were disobedient and they were afraid to go into the land. They were afraid that they couldn’t conquer the inhabitants of the land.

They did not believe (trust) God could do what He had promised (give them a land to live in).

The Israelites wandered aimlessly in the wilderness for a generation as a result of answered prayer. They were so afraid of the Canaanites, they prayed that God would not make them enter the Promised Land. So, God obliged, and they wandered in the desert for nearly 40 years until the disobedient generation died, and their children would inhabit the land.
