In the book of Numbers, we learn that the Israelites wandered aimlessly in the wilderness for a generation. Why?

They were afraid of the people, the giants and didn’t trust God.

They failed to move into the promised land. They did not trust.

The Israelites doubted God and refused to enter the promise land. They feared their enemies more than they trusted God and refused to enter the land that God promised to them. So God allowed them to wander in the wilderness for 40 years until they trusted God and obeyed Him.

God granted them their wish to not have to invade Canaan due to them fearing the enemy more than trusting Him; however, in return, he forced them to wander in the dessert until that generation died.

They wandered in the wilderness for a generation, because when they sent 12 spies into the promised 10 of them came back with a report that they couldn’t conquer the Canaanites. So they were left to wonder the wilderness until that generation died.
