The lesson here is not really a why did they keep sinning so much as a why has God continued to love us all even though we have always from the beginning continued to fail Him. They had to wonder in the wilderness for the blatant disbelief that they had for God even though He proved that He loved them all. Makes you step back for a moment and realize that you may have done the same thing and could quite possibly been forced to wonder in the wilderness as well. Because back then we did not have the redeeming qualities and grace of Christ. So we too would have been forced to wonder because we would have all sinned just as they did.

God delivered the Israelites from Egyptian bondage through might signs and wonders; leading them to take possession of the land promised to their forefathers. Prior to entering the promised land the Israelites convinced themselves that they could not defeat the inhabitants of the in the land that God had promised to give them.Their lack of belief in the Word of God brought forth the judgement of God. They were cursed for forty years of wilderness wonderings until the unbelieving generation died off. Like many of us they walked by sight and not by faith.
