Because they denied entering into Caanan (the promise land). This was God’s promise for his people, and they were afraid because the people were giants compared to their stature. They put God second.

In spite of the covenant that the Israelites had made with God, they still were not able to sufficiently trust Him to lead them safely into Canaan. They were therefore disciplined by God to 40 years in the desert.

Because they refused to enter the promised land because they were afraid of the inhabitants of the land. So, God made the wander in the wilderness forty years until that first generation died off. After that the next generation did enter the land that God promised to them.

Believe in God, His Word, His promise and obey His commands seem to me the first thing any people, nation, individual can do to please the God of Israel. They feared what was visible in front of their eyes and ears rather than paying attention to what God promised for the Israelites. In other words, the people chose to depend on their own understanding and feelings over God’s promise. As a consequence to their disobedience (sin), the Israelites suffered from wandering in the wilderness for a generation.
