Our school mission statement begins with “partnering with parents…” and it is truly a common and regular part of our discussion as a staff when we make decisions. I am also in school leadership, and we find ourselves coming back to the mission statement frequently, and the idea of supporting our parents helps inform our decisions about scheduling, discipline, and curriculum.

Our school has a parent group. We depend on our parents to get a lot of things done at out school.

We often had families that had economical needs. Since our little school was a ministry of the church congregation, we had congregants and families within the school donate clothes or food items. For our Spanish speaking community, we were able to help parents connect with programs that offered English as a Second Language. In general, families felt genuinely cared for by our staff because we took time every day to connect with parents, even if brief. This created a very close-knit community and often led to families that had no prior church home to find one in our congregation.

We hold parent info nights for tech safety, invite parents to volunteer for different things and attend events, and we have weekly “moms in prayer” meetings.

Our parents have become part of our school family. They are involved in several different ways! The biggest benefit in my opinion, is building a solid relationship with them, helping their child improve and grow in Christ, both in and outside the school walls!
