In what ways do you feel you currently nurture your students? How have you seen this impact them?

I feel that I nurture my students by greeting them, by noticing when they try hard and letting them know I noticed, by cheering up for them, by facilitating field trips.

I like to do as Ellen stated about greeting each child and guarding those few minutes at the beginning of the day to set up the mood of the day. Through out the day I refer to them by name or when I want to restate something a child said or a question they had I use their name to acknowledge them. I also commend a student when they were very brave to ask a tough question in front of their peers, that may make them seem to not understand, and then I ask the others if they had this question too. I make sure that my students know they can ask for clarification if I am being unclear in my teaching as it helps us all, including me, become better learners! This has helped my students become more open to saying they don’t understand and forms an knowing that they are not dumb, but just haven’t learned it yet!

Currently I nurture my students by being glad to see them and welcoming them each day. I am intentional about getting to know them and demonstrating care for them. I work to make my classroom a place they want to be and a course they enjoy. I have seen this impact them by having students tell me they enjoy coming to my course and that they learn a lot and have fun.

I take a genuine interest in the things that interest them. It can be difficult, and I’ve had to make notes for myself, but I follow up on the things that matter to them. Whenever possible, I attend sporting events, musicals and concerts. Their faces show their joy at having a teacher who follows through and supports them.

I endeavor to say hello to every student as they pass by in the hall. I ask how their day is going and I mean that I really want to know. If a student has an issue I want them to be able to bring that to me so that I might help them through it.
