I talk to them and I listen when they talk. I teach middle and high school students, and it is so important for them to understand that I care about them, that they are safe when they tell me things, and that I won’t try to solve their problems, but rather listen to them as they share their lives and hearts. Open communication is key to nurturing and fostering relationships with students. Once those are a reality, students thrive in an academic setting because trust has been established.

I have several students who have come more out of their shell since the beginning of the year. They have become more confident and speak up in course. I had a girl come to my course after Christmas break, and she has really grown a lot since the beginning of second semester.

I nurture my students by helping those who are stuck with their coding. I sit 1-on-1 with them as we walk through and solve the puzzle together. I helped my student with one arm to get a special keyboard just for him. I set up advanced coursework for students who mastered typing and coding. I try to know what is going on in their lives and create afterschool clubs that interest them.

I nuture my students by treating them as my very own children daily. I have personal conversations and each child knows I am invested.

I always make sure I am ready to teach my lessons. In addition, my room is clean, organized, and a safe place for them. I always stand by the door to greet my students, even when we are returning from a specials course. I ask how the course was, I welcome them back, or just smile at them. I truly appreciate and love all of my students, even though some might be the “difficult” ones. In my opinion, every child has at least one thing that brings a smile to my face, and that is enough for me to love them!
