I take interest in each of my students, ask specific questions about what’s going on in their lives…sports, family, etc. When you remember specific details, I can see how they light up and it makes them feel special.

This past year I had students earn points to pick items from a treasure box. This was very effective and each student was able to monitor their own behavior and/or completing assignments on time. Their faces would light up with excitement knowing that they earned this reward.

I enjoy when students come to me and share about their lives. I make it one of my priority to listen to them. Students at a young age like to speak about their feelings of joy and frustrations. I’ve experienced through out at my years of teaching that when we listen to our students they feel loved and appreciated.

In the past I have found taking a personal interest in them when they show something that they particularly like, has drawn a deep bond. Or trying to draw out a student who hasn’t shown much of themselves. Both have been great bonding facilitators.

One way that I nurture students is by asking questions regarding the content that I teach so that I can see how to assist them in growing in not just mathematical skills but in learning how to think, problem solve, and challenge themselves.
