In what ways do you feel you currently nurture your students? How have you seen this impact them?

I had a class last year that could be very trying, I chose 5 students, 3 that were indifferent and 2 that were very interested. I invited them to come to my class and have lunch, and after eating they chose a project to work on. In a couple of weeks they were all becoming friends and loved coming for their normal class. It became a very positive class. I gave others the same opportunity.

My students know that I want them to learn and grow in their knowledge of God’s Word. I ensure that they have the resources they need and that they know I will work with them outside of class time. By providing positive support and encouragement, I’ve known students to continue their studies on their own after they’ve moved away.

I nurture them by taking prayer requests, smiling and greeting them by name, and asking them about their extracurricular activities (drama, band or sports). I let them know that I am available most days for after-school tutorial to support their academics. I station myself outside the classroom door before and after school and between class periods.

I try to get to know my students. I greet them at the beginning of class and often ask about their games, events, or day. I have seen students being much more comfortable coming to see me when they are struggling. Students also greet me and ask about my day as well.

I create class rules based not only on school expectations from the handbook but also on things students bring up that would improve conditions for learning. I have seen one I do this, students take more responsibility for each other and it makes rules fun, bringing a positive side to behavior expectations.
