I encourage them when they have a difficult task or help them when they want to give up and remind them that what is important is that they do their best. When they are upset or frustrated I pray with them and we ask God to help and intervene. I listen to their side of the story and listen to their opinion. I help them express their feelings and remind them that we all make mistakes and forgive them if they did something wrong. I pray to God to help me love them for who they are and to see their gifts and talents and give me wisdom to help encourage those in them.

I start the year off by praying for them aloud, then I encourage other students to also start to pray for each other. I also make sure that every child has a chance to share their thoughts, questions, ideas, answers about our lessons and discussions. I encourage those who are shy to speak up and share their thoughts too. One thing I like to do is have my students partner share first and then have them tell what their partner shared, which I believe encourages each student that what they say should be heard by not only me as their teacher but by their peers too.

I cheer them on and ask about their daily lives and relationships.
