Throughout my life, I have been told I have a lot of compassion and empathy. I think this really helps me meet my students where there are in their circumstances. Taking the time to learn what is important to them both inside and outside the classroom has made a difference in my relationship with my students and their families. While working at a Christian School means I face less broken homes, we do still encounter them. Additionally, because of our sinful nature our students also face struggles put on them by adults when selfish behaviors are delighted in. When my students know that I care about the newest video/sports game they are playing, new books series they love, or that they are getting a sibling, they feel safe and cherished enough to come to me with their hurts, anger, and sadness, too. I find it a joy to be able to meet all of the needs my students have through biblical teaching and guidance.

In my classroom I tell my students I love them (because I do) and I tell them that God loves them. One of my rules is try even if it is hard. I tell my students that there will be things I ask you to do that I know with challenge you, but to never give up. I tell them that I am their helper and that they are smart and it is my job to figure out the right way to teach them. I never want a students to feel inferior or unloved. I never want them to feel “stupid” or that they can’t achieve great things. I let them know that they were given special gifts by God and that He has a plan for them. They just have to trust in Him and He will guide their paths. My prayer is they internalize the love that God has for them and define themselves as a child of God.

I strive to make students feel valued in my classroom by letting them know I trust what they already know about somehting. I want them to trust what they know and I will tell them that I like their thinking so far. When they know that I think they are on the right track, they will more likely let me lead them into more learning of things they do not yet know. I see this as acknowleging what God has planted on their heart and in their mind.

I really pray that my students feel valued! I try to do this by honoring their time and their thoughts. I work to make the lessons meaningful and interesting to them. I include many opportunities for them to be involved in the lessons and to share thro questions and ideas. I try to recognize and appreciate the unique always in which they have been created. I try to be present in each moment and take the time needed to really listen to them. This area can be a challenging one for me when the days are so very busy, but this is a very important area!

As a first year PE teacher, I intend to celebrate what my students are capable of, and what they aspire to do and be capable of in the future. I intend to help them grow and realize God made them who they are to spread the word throughout their life and what they are strong in and what they are weak in is a direct gift from God and we need to use these gifts daily to grow closer to Him and to serve God and others
