I also do not let their academic success impact the way I treat them outside of schoolwork. It is important that students realize they do not have to perform well academically to earn your respect and compassion.

I want to know my students’ interests, what they love about school, and how to get them engaged in learning the entire day. I then make sure to show that I care deeply for each of them. This might come in the form of welcoming them individually into the classroom. Walking alongside one of them in the hallway to give encouragement when there’s a tough situation. Even just applauding a student one on one so they know you see them. Being seen and encouraged is a large part of helping someone feel valued. I wish all teachers were asked this question mid-way through a school year. It gives you perspective into why you became a teacher and how to continue the year diving into that calling. Teaching is not easy by any means, focusing and loving on all students makes the why a momentum builder.

I encourage them to do their best, and when they struggle with a concept or have a low test score, I remind them that it does not affect their value as a person. When they misbehave, I remind them that the reason they are being held accountable is so they will grow.
