In what ways do you make your students feel valued?

I try to foster an environment where they know they can be heard. I love it when they voice their opinions and beliefs about certain issues. I try to connect with them on a generational level – we talk about gaming, music, movies, sports, etc…just anything and everything that connects me to them. I think sometimes students just need to know they are heard and respected, and I’ve found that when I meet them on those levels, I am able to reach them in ways for Christ that I wouldn’t be able to otherwise. The students I teach are very relational – so I try to show that I value them by focusing on developing relationships with them that will in turn allow me to better affect them for Christ.

As the school counselor I give them my time generously and lavishly and I listen and engage but mostly listen.

I make my students feel valued by building relationships with them. I hear their prayer requests and pray for and with them. I celebrate their successes and encourage them if they’re struggling. I show them and let them know that I love them and God loves them.

I listen, truly listen…when they have a question or need something from me I often ask them to wait one moment, then I stop what I am doing and give them my attention. They are valued enough to be given my undivided time as often as possible and this seems to connect with them. It is not alway possible to given them this but I always try to stop what I am doing when they need me. I have worked with people who hold a conversation without ever looking away from their work. It made me feel like a bother and unimportant, I don’t want my students to feel this way.

I love on each and every one of my students. I make sure that they know that I love and care for them. I also let them know how important they are to God. I teach them to celebrate each other. I also allow them to have open discussion.
